Are you nervous about the upcoming home renovation this summer? If you are someone who hates messes but also likes getting things done perfectly, you are in the right place. We’ve compiled a list of tips that we share with our home renovation clients in Kingston. Let’s begin…
1. Document Your Home
Before renovation begins, take photos and videos of your home’s current state. This helps in two ways – evidence for disputes or accidental damages and proof for insurance. Also make a list and match them with the photos.
2. Pack and Protect Valuables
Pack as much as valuables you can from the renovation area. You can rent reusable moving boxes that are more reliable when transporting your values to a storage unit. Move away the furniture too as it can cause accidents and get damaged during work. If there’s heavy furniture, wrap it up tightly with a sheet and seal it with a large plastic tarp.
3. Set Up a Temporary Kitchen
If your kitchen renovation is extensive, set up a temporary kitchen in another part of the house. All you need is a shelf. Your basement or garage both work well as temporary set-ups. Fill it up with essential appliances such as a microwave, a small refrigerator, and a coffee maker. Also, keep necessary cooking utensils and disposable dining ware handy.
4. Ensure Safety for Children and Pets
Especially if you have young kids, create zones where they can play and study. The same goes for pets. It helps with two things – keeps their life consistent and minimizes your worry for their safety.
5. Plan for Noise and Dust
Create a temporary workspace that is away from all the noise and dust. You can also rent a workspace in a coworking building to take meetings interrupt-free. Make sure to clean dust from areas that aren’t being renovated as it can aggravate allergies.
6. Create an Access Route for Workers
Have a dedicated path for workers to enter and exit your home to help contain mess and manage foot traffic efficiently. Protect any flooring that might see increased use to prevent wear and tear.
7. Stay Organized
Organize all renovation-related paperwork, including contracts, receipts, permits, and plans, in one accessible location. Keep your contractor’s contact information handy and have them give you an update every couple days.
8. Communicate Regularly
Schedule routine check-ins to discuss any issues and adjustments needed, ensuring the project stays aligned with your expectations and timeline.
9. Plan For Outages
There will be times during the day your renovation team will cut-off water and electricity. Make sure you are aware about the cut-off timings, so you can bathe the kids, prepare dinner, and plan your chores accordingly.
10. Prepare For Delays
Delays are quite common for home renovations. It could be due to material shortages, labour shortages, or holidays. Keep your goal in mind and that by the end, you’ll have a brand new home to enjoy.
